Keeping Your Dog Cool in Summer: The Essentials

Keeping Your Dog Cool in Summer: The Essentials

Summer heat is more dangerous for dogs than most owners realize. Unlike humans, who cool down by sweating all over, dogs only sweat through their paw pads. They rely almost entirely on panting. But panting takes muscle effort—it generates heat while trying to release it. On humid days, it barely works at all.

When a dog's cooling system fails, their body temperature can spike to deadly levels in under 15 minutes. Flat-faced breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs are at the highest risk.

The Pavement Test
Before every walk, place the back of your hand on the asphalt. If you cannot hold it there comfortably for five seconds, it will burn your dog's paws. Walk on grass or wait for sunset.

Five Fast Tips to Prevent Overheating

  1. Ice in the Bowl: Drop a few ice cubes or frozen blueberries into their water to encourage drinking.

  2. Cool the Belly: Dampen a towel with cool water and place it on their chest and stomach, not their back. That's where major blood vessels are closest to the surface.

  3. Frozen Treats: Skip the hot afternoon walk. Give a frozen Kong toy filled with peanut butter instead. Mental exercise is just as tiring.

  4. Never Shave Double-Coats: Breeds like Huskies and Goldens need their fur. It insulates them from heat and protects against sunburn.

  5. Watch for Danger Signs: Excessive drooling, bright red gums, or staggering means an emergency vet visit is needed immediately.

A lazy day in the air conditioning with a cool towel is not a boring day for your dog. It's a safe one. Enjoy the long evening walks when the pavement has cooled, and keep summer fun for everyone.
